Countably generated structure

Definition
Let be a signature and let be an -structure with universe . For , let denote the substructure generated by . It is the smallest subset of that contains and the constants and is closed under the functions of . The structure is countably generated when there is a countable set with .
Remarks
Here countable means finite or countably infinite, so every finitely generated algebra is countably generated.
Example: the group is countably generated. Take ; then is a sum of copies of or of its negative, so .
Non-example: the group is not countably generated. For a countable , each element of is the value of a term at finitely many elements of . There are only countably many such values, so is countable, while is not.
The same counting shows that, when is countable, an -structure is countably generated if and only if its universe is countable.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
