Covering space
Definition
Let and be topological spaces and let be a continuous map. An open set is evenly covered by if is a union of pairwise disjoint open sets , , with one more property. For each , the restriction is a homeomorphism, where and carry the subspace topology. The map is a covering map if every point of has an evenly covered open neighbourhood. Then is a covering space of .
Remarks
The sets are the sheets over . Many authors also require to be surjective, or to be nonempty and connected; this varies between textbooks. Every covering map is a local homeomorphism. Example: , , is a covering map. For , the arc is evenly covered, with sheets for . Non-example: the restriction of this to is a surjective local homeomorphism but not a covering map. For every open arc around , the part of near is a half-open piece that is not mapped onto .
