Coxeter group
Definition
Let be a set. A Coxeter matrix on is a family with values in such that:
- for all ;
- for all ;
- for all .
The Coxeter group of is the group with the presentation A group is a Coxeter group if it is isomorphic to for some Coxeter matrix . The pair is a Coxeter system.
Remarks
The relation for says . For the relation says that and commute. In each has order exactly , and has order exactly . The matrix is often drawn as a Coxeter diagram: a vertex for each , and an edge labelled when .
Example: the symmetric group is a Coxeter group. Take for , with and for . The relations hold: is a -cycle, and disjoint transpositions commute. A theorem of Moore says that these relations define .
Non-example: the cyclic group is not a Coxeter group. A Coxeter group is generated by elements of order , so in its abelianization every element has order at most . But is abelian, so it equals its abelianization, and it has an element of order .
