Crossed product

Definition

Let AA be a unital C*-algebra, and let GG be a discrete group. Let α ⁣:G→Aut⁡(A)\alpha \colon G \to \Aut(A) be a group action of GG on AA by ∗*-automorphisms. Let Cc(G,A)C_c(G, A) be the space of finitely supported functions f ⁣:G→Af \colon G \to A, with the product and involution (f∗g)(s)=∑t∈Gf(t) αt(g(t−1s)),f∗(s)=αs(f(s−1)∗).(f * g)(s) = \sum_{t \in G} f(t) \, \alpha_t\big(g(t^{-1} s)\big), \qquad f^*(s) = \alpha_s\big(f(s^{-1})^*\big). Let HH be a Hilbert space. A covariant representation of (A,G,α)(A, G, \alpha) on HH is a pair (π,u)(\pi, u) with two parts. The first, π\pi, is a unital ∗*-representation of AA on HH; the second, uu, is a unitary representation of GG on HH. The pair must satisfy usπ(a)us∗=π(αs(a))u_s \pi(a) u_s^* = \pi(\alpha_s(a)) for all s∈Gs \in G and a∈Aa \in A. It gives the ∗*-representation (π⋊u)(f)=∑s∈Gπ(f(s))us(\pi \rtimes u)(f) = \sum_{s \in G} \pi(f(s)) u_s of Cc(G,A)C_c(G, A). The crossed product A⋊αGA \rtimes_\alpha G is the completion of Cc(G,A)C_c(G, A) in the norm ∥f∥=sup⁡{∥(π⋊u)(f)∥:(π,u) a covariant representation}.\norm{f} = \sup \set{\norm{(\pi \rtimes u)(f)} : (\pi, u) \text{ a covariant representation}}.

Remarks

The element aδsa \delta_s that takes the value aa at ss and 00 elsewhere is written ausa u_s; then usaus∗=αs(a)u_s a u_s^* = \alpha_s(a) in A⋊αGA \rtimes_\alpha G. The reduced crossed product A⋊α,rGA \rtimes_{\alpha, r} G uses only the regular covariant representations on ℓ2(G,H)\ell^2(G, H); it equals the full one when GG is amenable. For locally compact groups, Cc(G,A)C_c(G, A) is replaced by continuous compactly supported functions and sums by integrals against Haar measure.

Example: take A=ℂA = \C and the trivial action. Then Cc(G,ℂ)C_c(G, \C) is the group algebra of GG with convolution, and the covariant representations are the unitary representations of GG. So ℂ⋊G\C \rtimes G is the full group C*-algebra C∗(G)C^*(G).

Non-example: let ℤ\Z act on A=C(𝕋)A = C(\mathbb{T}) by an irrational rotation. If α\alpha is replaced by the identity in the formulas for the product and the involution, the result is the crossed product for the trivial action. That algebra is C(𝕋)⊗C∗(ℤ)≅C(𝕋2)C(\mathbb{T}) \otimes C^*(\Z) \cong C(\mathbb{T}^2), which is commutative. The twisted product gives instead the noncommutative irrational rotation algebra.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
