Definition
Let be a real random variable such that is finite for all in an open interval containing . Let be its cumulant generating function on that interval. For , the -th cumulant of is so that near .
Remarks
Writing and , the first cumulants are , , and . If and are independent, then , so . Also for real , and for . Example: if is normal with mean and variance , then , so , and for . Example: if is Poisson with mean , then , so for all . Non-example: a Cauchy variable has for all , so the hypothesis fails and it has no cumulants. When only is known, one defines instead from the expansion of at , as for the coefficient of ; the two definitions agree when both apply.
