Definition

Let GG be a Lie group with Lie algebra 𝔤\mathfrak{g}, let P→MP \to M be a principal GG-bundle, and let ω\omega be a connection form on PP. For 𝔤\mathfrak{g}-valued 11-forms α,β\alpha, \beta on PP, let [α∧β][\alpha \wedge \beta] be the 𝔤\mathfrak{g}-valued 22-form [α∧β](X,Y)=[α(X),β(Y)]−[α(Y),β(X)][\alpha \wedge \beta](X, Y) = [\alpha(X), \beta(Y)] - [\alpha(Y), \beta(X)]. The curvature form of ω\omega is the 𝔤\mathfrak{g}-valued 22-form Ω=dω+12[ω∧ω],\Omega = d\omega + \tfrac12 [\omega \wedge \omega], where dd is the exterior derivative. The connection is flat if Ω=0\Omega = 0.

Remarks

Unwinding the bracket, Ω(X,Y)=dω(X,Y)+[ω(X),ω(Y)]\Omega(X, Y) = d\omega(X, Y) + [\omega(X), \omega(Y)]. This is the structure equation; an equivalent form is Ω(X,Y)=dω(hX,hY)\Omega(X, Y) = d\omega(hX, hY), where hh is the projection of TPTP onto the horizontal bundle ker⁡ω\ker \omega. The form Ω\Omega vanishes on vertical vectors and satisfies Rg∗Ω=Ad(g−1)ΩR_g^* \Omega = \mathrm{Ad}(g^{-1}) \Omega. For a matrix group, 12[ω∧ω]=ω∧ω\frac12 [\omega \wedge \omega] = \omega \wedge \omega with the matrix wedge product, so Ω=dω+ω∧ω\Omega = d\omega + \omega \wedge \omega. Example: on M×GM \times G with ω\omega the pullback of the Maurer–Cartan form θ\theta, the Maurer–Cartan equation dθ+12[θ∧θ]=0d\theta + \frac12 [\theta \wedge \theta] = 0 gives Ω=0\Omega = 0, so this connection is flat. Non-example of flatness: for G=U(1)G = \mathrm{U}(1) the bracket vanishes and Ω=dω\Omega = d\omega; for a connection on the Hopf bundle S3→S2S^3 \to S^2, Ω\Omega descends to a 22-form on S2S^2 with nonzero integral, so Ω≠0\Omega \ne 0.
