Curve-shortening flow
Builds on Curvature of a curve
Definition
Let and let . Let be continuous and smooth on . Assume that for each the curve is an immersed plane curve. Let be the signed curvature of at . Let be the unit normal obtained by turning the unit tangent by . The family is a solution of the curve-shortening flow with initial curve if
Remarks
Equivalently, , where is the arc length parameter of ; this is a nonlinear partial differential equation of heat type. The normal velocity is what matters: adding a tangential velocity only changes the parametrization of the curves. The length of satisfies , and the enclosed area of an embedded counterclockwise curve satisfies .
Example: the circles for form a solution. For a counterclockwise circle of radius , and points to the center, and indeed .
Non-example: the shrinking circles move with normal speed instead of , so they do not solve the equation.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
