Definition

Let (π’ž,βŠ—,I)(\mathcal{C}, \otimes, I) be a small monoidal category, and let [π’ž,π’πžπ][\mathcal{C}, \mathbf{Set}] be the functor category of functors π’žβ†’π’πžπ\mathcal{C} \to \mathbf{Set}. The Day convolution of F,G∈[π’ž,π’πžπ]F, G \in [\mathcal{C}, \mathbf{Set}] is the functor Fβˆ—G ⁣:π’žβ†’π’πžπF \ast G \colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathbf{Set} given by the coend (Fβˆ—G)(c)=∫a,bβˆˆπ’žHomβ‘π’ž(aβŠ—b,c)Γ—F(a)Γ—G(b).(F \ast G)(c) = \int^{a, b \in \mathcal{C}} \Hom_{\mathcal{C}}(a \otimes b, c) \times F(a) \times G(b). With unit object the hom functor Homβ‘π’ž(I,βˆ’)\Hom_{\mathcal{C}}(I, -), Day convolution makes [π’ž,π’πžπ][\mathcal{C}, \mathbf{Set}] a monoidal category.

Remarks

Equivalently, Fβˆ—GF \ast G is the left Kan extension of the functor (a,b)↦F(a)Γ—G(b)(a, b) \mapsto F(a) \times G(b) on π’žΓ—π’ž\mathcal{C} \times \mathcal{C} along βŠ—β€‰β£:π’žΓ—π’žβ†’π’ž\otimes \colon \mathcal{C} \times \mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{C}. Natural transformations Fβˆ—Gβ†’HF \ast G \to H correspond to families of maps F(a)Γ—G(b)β†’H(aβŠ—b)F(a) \times G(b) \to H(a \otimes b) natural in aa and bb. Example: let π’ž\mathcal{C} be the discrete category on β„•\N with βŠ—=+\otimes = + and I=0I = 0, so a functor FF is a sequence of sets F(0),F(1),…F(0), F(1), \ldots. Since Hom⁑(a+b,n)\Hom(a + b, n) is a point when a+b=na + b = n and empty otherwise, (Fβˆ—G)(n)=⨆a+b=nF(a)Γ—G(b)(F \ast G)(n) = \bigsqcup_{a + b = n} F(a) \times G(b), the Cauchy product. Non-example: the pointwise product (FΓ—G)(c)=F(c)Γ—G(c)(F \times G)(c) = F(c) \times G(c) is also a monoidal structure, but it is not the Day convolution. In the example above it pairs elements of equal degree, and its unit is the constant functor with value a point, not Hom⁑(0,βˆ’)\Hom(0, -). The monoidal category [π’ž,π’πžπ][\mathcal{C}, \mathbf{Set}] with Day convolution is closed, and a↦Homβ‘π’ž(a,βˆ’)a \mapsto \Hom_{\mathcal{C}}(a, -) is a strong monoidal functor π’žopβ†’[π’ž,π’πžπ]\mathcal{C}^{\mathrm{op}} \to [\mathcal{C}, \mathbf{Set}]. The same construction works for functors into a cocomplete closed symmetric monoidal category 𝒱\mathcal{V} in place of π’πžπ\mathbf{Set}.
