Definition
Let be a smooth manifold, and for let be the real vector space of smooth differential forms of degree on . Let be the exterior derivative; it satisfies . A form is closed if , and exact if for some ; for only the zero form counts as exact. The -th de Rham cohomology group of is the quotient vector space
Remarks
Since , every exact form is closed, so the quotient makes sense. is the space of locally constant functions, so when has finitely many connected components its dimension is their number. Example: on every closed -form with is exact, by the Poincaré lemma, so for and . Non-example of exactness: on the form is closed but not exact. Its integral over the unit circle is , while the integral of an exact form over a closed loop is ; so , and in fact it is . A smooth map induces linear maps by pullback of forms, and the wedge product of forms makes a graded ring.
