Definition

Let kk be a field and let XX be a scheme that is smooth over kk. For p≥0p \ge 0 let ΩX/kp=⋀pΩX/k1\Omega^p_{X/k} = \bigwedge^p \Omega^1_{X/k}, where ΩX/k1\Omega^1_{X/k} is the sheaf of differentials, built from Kähler differentials. The exterior derivative d ⁣:ΩX/kp→ΩX/kp+1d \colon \Omega^p_{X/k} \to \Omega^{p+1}_{X/k} is the unique kk-linear map with d(f)=dfd(f) = df on functions, d∘d=0d \circ d = 0, and d(α∧β)=dα∧β+(−1)pα∧dβd(\alpha \wedge \beta) = d\alpha \wedge \beta + (-1)^p \alpha \wedge d\beta for α\alpha of degree pp. The complex ΩX/k∙=(ΩX/k0→ΩX/k1→ΩX/k2→⋯ )\Omega^\bullet_{X/k} = (\Omega^0_{X/k} \to \Omega^1_{X/k} \to \Omega^2_{X/k} \to \cdots) is the algebraic de Rham complex. The algebraic de Rham cohomology of XX is the hypercohomology HdRi(X/k)=ℍi(X,ΩX/k∙)H^i_{\mathrm{dR}}(X/k) = \mathbb{H}^i(X, \Omega^\bullet_{X/k}). This is the ii-th sheaf cohomology of the complex ΩX/k∙\Omega^\bullet_{X/k}, computed from an injective resolution of the complex.

Remarks

If X=Spec⁡AX = \operatorname{Spec} A is affine, the sheaves ΩX/kp\Omega^p_{X/k} are quasi-coherent and have no higher cohomology. Then HdRi(X/k)H^i_{\mathrm{dR}}(X/k) is the ii-th cohomology of the complex of AA-modules ΩA/k∙\Omega^\bullet_{A/k}. Example: let kk have characteristic 00 and A=k[t,t−1]A = k[t, t^{-1}]. Then ΩA/k1=A dt\Omega^1_{A/k} = A \, dt and d(tn)=ntn−1dtd(t^n) = n t^{n-1} dt. The kernel of dd on AA is kk, and the image of dd contains tm dtt^m \, dt for every m≠−1m \ne -1. So HdR0=kH^0_{\mathrm{dR}} = k and HdR1H^1_{\mathrm{dR}} is spanned by the class of dt/tdt/t. Non-example of good behaviour: if kk has characteristic p>0p > 0 and A=k[t]A = k[t], then d(tp)=0d(t^p) = 0. So HdR0(𝔸k1/k)=k[tp]H^0_{\mathrm{dR}}(\mathbb{A}^1_k/k) = k[t^p] is infinite-dimensional, and the theory does not count connected components as in characteristic 00. Grothendieck's comparison theorem: if XX is smooth over ℂ\C, then HdRi(X/ℂ)≅Hi(X(ℂ),ℂ)H^i_{\mathrm{dR}}(X/\C) \cong H^i(X(\C), \C) for all ii.
