De Sitter space
Builds on Minkowski spaceSectional curvatureEinstein manifold
Example
Let and . Equip with the Minkowski form . The de Sitter space of radius is the hyperboloid with the metric induced by .
Check that it is a Lorentzian manifold: the coordinates , with and cover the whole hyperboloid. In them where is the round metric of , so has one negative and positive directions.
The sectional curvature is constant and equal to , so the Ricci tensor is and is an Einstein manifold. Hence it solves the vacuum Einstein equations with positive cosmological constant which is in dimension . The linear maps of preserving preserve the hyperboloid, so the isometry group contains , and is maximally symmetric. The spatial slices are spheres that shrink to radius at and then expand exponentially.
