Deceleration parameter

Builds on Scale factorFriedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker metric

Definition

Let a ⁣:I→(0,∞)a \colon I \to (0, \infty) be the scale factor of a Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker metric, twice differentiable, and let t∈It \in I with a˙(t)≠0\dot a(t) \neq 0. The deceleration parameter at time tt is q(t)=−a(t) a¨(t)a˙(t)2.q(t) = -\frac{a(t)\, \ddot a(t)}{\dot a(t)^2}.

Remarks

With the Hubble parameter H=a˙/aH = \dot a / a, one has q=−1−H˙/H2q = -1 - \dot H / H^2. Example: for a(t)=t2/3a(t) = t^{2/3}, a˙=23t−1/3\dot a = \tfrac{2}{3} t^{-1/3} and a¨=−29t−4/3\ddot a = -\tfrac{2}{9} t^{-4/3}, so q=29/49=12q = \tfrac{2}{9} / \tfrac{4}{9} = \tfrac{1}{2}. For a(t)=eHta(t) = e^{Ht} with HH constant, q=−1q = -1. Non-example: for a static model, a˙=0\dot a = 0, so qq is not defined. The sign of qq is opposite to the sign of a¨\ddot a: q<0q < 0 exactly when the expansion accelerates. For a mixture of perfect fluids with constant equation of state parameters wiw_i and density parameters Ωi\Omega_i, the second Friedmann equation gives q=12∑iΩi(1+3wi)q = \tfrac{1}{2} \sum_i \Omega_i (1 + 3 w_i).

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
