Deck transformation group

Definition

Let p ⁣:X~→Xp \colon \tilde X \to X be a covering map. A deck transformation of pp is a homeomorphism f ⁣:X~→X~f \colon \tilde X \to \tilde X such that p∘f=pp \circ f = p. The deck transformation group of pp is the set of all deck transformations of pp, with composition of maps as the group operation.

Remarks

Example: for p ⁣:ℝ→S1p \colon \R \to S^1, p(t)=(cos⁡2πt,sin⁡2πt)p(t) = (\cos 2\pi t, \sin 2\pi t), each translation t↦t+nt \mapsto t + n with n∈ℤn \in \Z is a homeomorphism with p(t+n)=p(t)p(t + n) = p(t). These are all the deck transformations, so the group is isomorphic to ℤ\Z.

Non-example: the translation t↦t+12t \mapsto t + \tfrac12 is a homeomorphism of ℝ\R, but p(t+12)=−p(t)≠p(t)p(t + \tfrac12) = -p(t) \ne p(t), so it is not a deck transformation.

The group is also called the covering transformation group and is written Deck⁡(p)\operatorname{Deck}(p) or G(X~)G(\tilde X). If X~\tilde X is connected, a deck transformation that fixes one point is the identity. The covering is called normal, or regular, when the group acts transitively on each fibre.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
