Dedekind-finite ring
Builds on RingMatrix ring
Definition
Let be a ring with . The ring is Dedekind-finite if, for all , the equation implies .
Remarks
Example: for a field and , the matrix ring is Dedekind-finite. Indeed, if , then , so is invertible, and , hence .
Non-example: let be the vector space of sequences over a field and . Let and . Then , but , so .
Other names are directly finite and von Neumann finite. Equivalently, is not isomorphic as a left -module to for any nonzero module . Every commutative ring, every finite ring, and every left Noetherian ring is Dedekind-finite.
