Dedekind number
Definition
Let be an integer, and order coordinatewise: when for every . A Boolean function is monotone if implies . The Dedekind number is the number of monotone Boolean functions .
Remarks
Identify with the subsets of . A monotone is determined by the minimal sets with , and these form an antichain. So is also the number of antichains of subsets of , including the empty antichain.
Example: . The monotone functions of are , , , , and . The matching antichains are , , , , and .
Non-example: the function , equal to exactly when , is not monotone. Indeed but .
