Associative rings and algebras Definition
Deformation of algebras
Definition
Let be a field and let be an associative algebra over with product . Let be the -module of formal power series with coefficients in . A formal deformation of is a -bilinear associative product on of the form where each is -bilinear. Two formal deformations and are equivalent if there is a -linear map , with each -linear, such that for all .
Remarks
Comparing the coefficients of in gives so is a Hochschild -cocycle, and equivalent deformations have cohomologous . Example: for any , the product is a formal deformation, since it is the original product carried over by ; it is called trivial. Non-example: on , let and . For , the left side of the cocycle identity is , so is not associative. If the Hochschild cohomology is zero, then every formal deformation of is trivial, and is called rigid.
