Definition

Let KK be a field and let AA be a central simple algebra over KK. The dimension dim⁡KA\dim_K A is a perfect square n2n^2 with n≥1n \ge 1. The degree of AA is the integer n=dim⁡KAn = \sqrt{\dim_K A}, written deg⁡A\deg A.

Remarks

Let Kˉ\bar{K} be an algebraic closure of KK. The tensor product A⊗KKˉA \otimes_K \bar{K} is central simple over Kˉ\bar{K}, hence isomorphic to Mn(Kˉ)M_n(\bar{K}) for some nn by Wedderburn's theorem. So dim⁡KA=dim⁡KˉMn(Kˉ)=n2\dim_K A = \dim_{\bar{K}} M_n(\bar{K}) = n^2 is a square.

Example: deg⁡Mn(K)=n\deg M_n(K) = n, and the quaternion algebra ℍ\mathbb{H} over ℝ\R has degree 22, since dim⁡ℝℍ=4\dim_\R \mathbb{H} = 4.

Non-example: ℂ\C has dimension 22 over ℝ\R, which is not a square, so it has no degree as an algebra over ℝ\R; it is not central over ℝ\R.

If A≅Mm(D)A \cong M_m(D) with DD a division algebra, then deg⁡A=mdeg⁡D\deg A = m \deg D. Degree is multiplicative: deg⁡(A⊗KB)=deg⁡A⋅deg⁡B\deg(A \otimes_K B) = \deg A \cdot \deg B.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
