Definition
Let be an algebraically closed field and let be a projective variety of dimension . Let be its homogeneous ideal, and let be the Hilbert polynomial of the graded ring . Then has degree and leading coefficient for a positive integer . The degree of is .
Remarks
Equivalently, is the number of points of for a general linear subspace of dimension .
Example: let with an irreducible homogeneous polynomial of degree . The exact sequence gives . Here and the leading coefficient is , so .
Non-example of the geometric form: the conic has degree . The line meets it in the two points and . The tangent line meets it only in . The tangent line is not general, so it does not compute the degree; it counts the point with multiplicity .
The degree depends on the embedding: embedded as a line has degree , and embedded as the conic above it has degree . For a hypersurface with irreducible, the degree of the variety is the degree of .
