Builds on 3-manifoldKnotLinkHomeomorphism
Definition
Let be a closed orientable 3-manifold and let be a smooth knot, that is, a smoothly embedded circle. Let be a closed tubular neighbourhood of , a solid torus, and let be the knot exterior, with boundary torus . Let be an essential simple closed curve, called the slope. Let and let be a homeomorphism with . The Dehn surgery on with slope is the manifold Its homeomorphism type depends only on the isotopy class of in , not on its orientation. For a link one does this on each component, with one slope for each.
Remarks
For a knot in , let be a meridian, bounding a disc in , and a longitude that is null-homologous in , both oriented. Each slope is isotopic to a curve representing in with coprime, and the slope is labelled by . The slope gives back ; a slope with is integral.
Example: let be the unknot in . Its exterior is a solid torus in which bounds a disc. Surgery with slope , that is , glues two solid tori so that their meridians match, and the result is . Surgery on with slope , , gives a lens space , up to the orientation convention.
Non-example: a curve that bounds a disc in is not a slope. No homeomorphism can send to it, because a homeomorphism of tori sends essential curves to essential curves.
