Definition
Let be a smooth projective algebraic surface over an algebraically closed field, with canonical divisor . is a del Pezzo surface if the anticanonical divisor is ample. Its degree is the self-intersection number .
Remarks
The degree satisfies . Classification: is either , of degree , or the blow-up of at points in general position. Here general position means three conditions. No three of the points lie on a line, and no six lie on a conic. No eight lie on a cubic that is singular at one of them. Example: has for a line , so is ample and is a del Pezzo surface of degree . Example: a smooth cubic surface has by adjunction, where is a plane section, so is ample and . Non-example: blow up at three points on a line , and let be the strict transform of . Then , and adjunction gives . So , and is not ample. Some authors allow mild singularities, such as ADE singularities, and call the smooth ones nonsingular del Pezzo surfaces.
