Definition
Let , let be constants, and let be a function. A delay differential equation with constant delays is an equation for an unknown function with values in . Let and let be continuous, the history. A solution of the initial value problem is a continuous , for some , with these properties. It equals the history: for . It is differentiable on , and the equation holds there.
Remarks
Example: , with , and . Its characteristic equation, from , is , which has infinitely many complex roots.
Non-example: is not a delay equation, since the rate at time depends on a later time; such equations are called advanced. An ordinary differential equation is the degenerate case in which does not depend on the delayed arguments.
Delay equations are a special case of functional differential equations of retarded type, with . Delays may also vary with time or with the state, as in .
