Definition

Let pp be a prime, let qq be a power of pp, and let 𝔽‾q\overline{\F}_q be an algebraic closure of the finite field 𝔽q\F_q. Let 𝐆\mathbf{G} be a connected reductive group over 𝔽‾q\overline{\F}_q with a Frobenius endomorphism FF for an 𝔽q\F_q-structure. Let G=𝐆FG = \mathbf{G}^F be the finite group of fixed points of FF. Let 𝐓\mathbf{T} be an FF-stable maximal torus of 𝐆\mathbf{G}, and let T=𝐓FT = \mathbf{T}^F. Let 𝐁\mathbf{B} be a Borel subgroup containing 𝐓\mathbf{T}, not necessarily FF-stable, with unipotent radical 𝐔\mathbf{U}. The Deligne–Lusztig variety is X~={g∈𝐆:g−1F(g)∈F(𝐔)}.\tilde{X} = \set{g \in \mathbf{G} : g^{-1} F(g) \in F(\mathbf{U})}. The group GG acts on X~\tilde{X} by left multiplication and T=𝐓FT = \mathbf{T}^F acts by right multiplication. Let ℓ≠p\ell \ne p be a prime and let θ ⁣:T→ℚ‾ℓ×\theta \colon T \to \overline{\Q}_\ell^\times be a character. Let Hci(X~)θH^i_c(\tilde{X})_\theta be the subspace of the ℓ\ell-adic cohomology with compact support Hci(X~,ℚ‾ℓ)H^i_c(\tilde{X}, \overline{\Q}_\ell) on which TT acts through θ\theta. The Deligne–Lusztig virtual character is the function on GG R𝐓θ(g)=∑i≥0(−1)itr⁡(g,Hci(X~)θ).R_{\mathbf{T}}^\theta(g) = \sum_{i \ge 0} (-1)^i \tr\big(g, H^i_c(\tilde{X})_\theta\big). Deligne–Lusztig theory is the study of the representations of GG through the virtual characters R𝐓θR_{\mathbf{T}}^\theta.

Remarks

The virtual character R𝐓θR_{\mathbf{T}}^\theta does not depend on the choice of 𝐁\mathbf{B}. Every irreducible character of GG occurs with nonzero multiplicity in some R𝐓θR_{\mathbf{T}}^\theta. Its degree is R𝐓θ(1)=±[G:T]p′R_{\mathbf{T}}^\theta(1) = \pm [G : T]_{p'}, the part of the index prime to pp, up to a sign. Example: let 𝐆=GL2\mathbf{G} = GL_2 with FF raising matrix entries to the qq-th power, let 𝐓\mathbf{T} be the diagonal torus and 𝐁\mathbf{B} the upper triangular matrices, both FF-stable. Then R𝐓θR_{\mathbf{T}}^\theta is induced from the upper triangular subgroup B=𝐁FB = \mathbf{B}^F of GL2(𝔽q)GL_2(\F_q), by the character of BB that equals θ\theta on TT and is 11 on 𝐔F\mathbf{U}^F. For θ=1\theta = 1 it has degree q+1=[G:B]q + 1 = [G : B], and it is the sum of the trivial and the Steinberg character. Second example: for 𝐆=GL2\mathbf{G} = GL_2 there is also an FF-stable maximal torus 𝐓\mathbf{T} with T≅𝔽q2×T \cong \F_{q^2}^\times, contained in no FF-stable Borel subgroup. For a character θ\theta of 𝔽q2×\F_{q^2}^\times with θ≠θq\theta \ne \theta^q, the function −R𝐓θ-R_{\mathbf{T}}^\theta is an irreducible cuspidal character of degree q−1q - 1, which is not induced from any proper parabolic subgroup. This shows why the cohomological construction is needed.
