Definition

Let 𝒜\mathcal{A} and ℬ\mathcal{B} be abelian categories. A cohomological δ\delta-functor from 𝒜\mathcal{A} to ℬ\mathcal{B} consists of additive functors Tn ⁣:𝒜→ℬT^n \colon \mathcal{A} \to \mathcal{B} for n≥0n \ge 0 and of connecting morphisms. For every short exact sequence 0→A′→A→A′′→00 \to A' \to A \to A'' \to 0 in 𝒜\mathcal{A} and every n≥0n \ge 0, there is a morphism δn ⁣:Tn(A′′)→Tn+1(A′)\delta^n \colon T^n(A'') \to T^{n+1}(A'). These data must satisfy:

  1. for every short exact sequence, the sequence 0→T0(A′)→T0(A)→T0(A′′)→δ0T1(A′)→T1(A)→T1(A′′)→δ1T2(A′)→⋯0 \to T^0(A') \to T^0(A) \to T^0(A'') \xrightarrow{\delta^0} T^1(A') \to T^1(A) \to T^1(A'') \xrightarrow{\delta^1} T^2(A') \to \cdots is exact;
  2. the maps δn\delta^n are natural. Let a morphism from 0→A′→A→A′′→00 \to A' \to A \to A'' \to 0 to 0→B′→B→B′′→00 \to B' \to B \to B'' \to 0 have components f′ ⁣:A′→B′f' \colon A' \to B' and f′′ ⁣:A′′→B′′f'' \colon A'' \to B''. Then δn∘Tn(f′′)=Tn+1(f′)∘δn\delta^n \circ T^n(f'') = T^{n+1}(f') \circ \delta^n.

A δ\delta-functor (Tn)(T^n) is universal if the following holds for every δ\delta-functor (Sn)(S^n) and every natural transformation T0→S0T^0 \to S^0. There is a unique family of natural transformations Tn→SnT^n \to S^n extending it and commuting with the maps δn\delta^n.

Remarks

Example: for an RR-module MM, the functors Tn=Ext⁡Rn(M,−)T^n = \operatorname{Ext}^n_R(M, -) with their connecting maps form a δ\delta-functor, since Ext has the long exact sequence in the second variable, and it is natural. Non-example: on abelian groups, put T0=Hom⁡ℤ(ℤ/2ℤ,−)T^0 = \Hom_\Z(\Z/2\Z, -) and Tn=0T^n = 0 for n≥1n \ge 1. For 0→ℤ→⋅2ℤ→ℤ/2ℤ→00 \to \Z \xrightarrow{\cdot 2} \Z \to \Z/2\Z \to 0 the sequence in clause 1 starts 0→0→0→ℤ/2ℤ→00 \to 0 \to 0 \to \Z/2\Z \to 0, which is not exact, so clause 1 fails. A theorem of Grothendieck says that a δ\delta-functor is universal when each TnT^n with n≥1n \ge 1 is effaceable, meaning that every object AA embeds by a monomorphism uu with Tn(u)=0T^n(u) = 0. Hence the right derived functors of a left exact functor form a universal δ\delta-functor. Homological δ\delta-functors (Tn)(T_n) are defined in the same way with the arrows δn ⁣:Tn(A′′)→Tn−1(A′)\delta_n \colon T_n(A'') \to T_{n-1}(A').

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
