Density matrix

Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space with inner product . A density operator, or density matrix, on is a bounded operator on such that:
- is positive: for all ;
- is a trace class operator;
- .
Remarks
On a complex Hilbert space, clause 1 implies that is self-adjoint. When , a density matrix is a Hermitian positive semidefinite matrix with trace . In general for an orthonormal family of eigenvectors and eigenvalues with .
Example: is Hermitian with trace . Its diagonal entries are positive and its determinant is , so both eigenvalues are positive and is a density matrix.
Non-example: is Hermitian with trace , but its determinant is . So one eigenvalue is negative, and clause 1 fails.
