Definition

Let AA be a nonempty set and let X⊆AℕX \subseteq A^{\N} be a set of infinite sequences of elements of AA. The game G(A,X)G(A, X) is played by two players, I and II. Player I chooses a0∈Aa_0 \in A, then player II chooses a1∈Aa_1 \in A, then player I chooses a2∈Aa_2 \in A, and so on forever. Player I wins the play x=(a0,a1,a2,… )x = (a_0, a_1, a_2, \dots) if x∈Xx \in X, and player II wins it otherwise.

  1. A strategy for player I is a map σ\sigma from the finite sequences of elements of AA of even length to AA. A strategy for player II is a map τ\tau from the finite sequences of odd length to AA.
  2. A play follows σ\sigma if a2n=σ(a0,…,a2n−1)a_{2n} = \sigma(a_0, \dots, a_{2n-1}) for all n≥0n \ge 0, and similarly for τ\tau and the odd positions.
  3. A strategy for a player is winning if that player wins every play that follows it.

The game G(A,X)G(A, X), and the set XX, is determined if player I or player II has a winning strategy.

Remarks

Example: let A=ℕA = \N and X={x∈ℕℕ:x0=0}X = \set{x \in \N^{\N} : x_0 = 0}. The strategy of player I that plays 00 at the first move, and anything later, is winning, so XX is determined.

Non-example: under the axiom of choice there is a set X⊆{0,1}ℕX \subseteq \set{0, 1}^{\N} for which neither player has a winning strategy. It is built by a diagonal argument against a well-ordering of all strategies.

At most one player can have a winning strategy: two winning strategies σ\sigma and τ\tau would produce a single play that both players win. The case A=ℕA = \N is the main one; then AℕA^{\N} is the Baire space with its product topology.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
