Definition
Let be a commutative ring, let be an matrix with entries in , and let be an integer with . The determinantal ideal is the ideal of generated by all minors of . When is a field, is the polynomial ring and is the generic matrix, is the generic determinantal ideal.
Remarks
When is algebraically closed, the zero set of in is the set of matrices of rank less than . For the generic matrix, is a prime ideal of height , and is Cohen–Macaulay.
Example: for , and , the ideal is generated by the three minors , and . Its height is .
Non-example: in the same ring, the principal ideal is generated by one minor only. It has height by Krull's principal ideal theorem, so it is not , which has height .
