Field theory and polynomials Definition
Difference algebra
Definition
A difference ring is a pair , where is a commutative ring with identity and is a ring homomorphism, that is:
- for all ;
- for all ;
- .
A difference field is a difference ring in which is a field. A difference ring is inversive if is an automorphism. Difference algebra is the study of difference rings, difference fields, and the difference equations and ideals over them.
Remarks
Some authors require to be an automorphism in the definition of a difference ring or field. A difference polynomial over is a polynomial in the variables , and a solution is an element of a difference ring extension at which it vanishes.
Example: with is an inversive difference field. The shift is additive and multiplicative, it fixes , and its inverse is .
Example: a field of characteristic with the Frobenius map is a difference field.
Non-example: with is not a difference ring. It satisfies clause 1, but , so clause 3 fails, and , so clause 2 fails too.
