Differential graded Lie algebra
Definition
Let be a field of characteristic . Let be a -graded vector space over , and write when is homogeneous. A differential graded Lie algebra structure on is a pair . Here is bilinear and is linear. The conditions are, for all homogeneous :
- for all ;
- ;
- ;
- for all , and ;
- .
Remarks
Example: a Lie algebra placed in degree , with for and . All signs are , so clauses 2 and 3 become antisymmetry and the Jacobi identity, and clauses 4 and 5 hold because both sides are .
Example: for a smooth manifold and a Lie algebra , the forms with and the exterior derivative form a differential graded Lie algebra.
Non-example: take as above, but with . This fails clause 4, because does not raise the degree and when .
By clause 4, is a cochain complex, and by clause 5 its cohomology inherits a graded Lie bracket. Some authors use a lower grading in which lowers the degree by one.
