Diffusion-limited aggregation
Builds on Random walkHarmonic measure
Example
Diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) on is a random growing sequence of finite connected sets . Start with . Given , let be the set of points of adjacent to . Release a simple random walk "from infinity", and let , where is the first point of that the walk visits. Precisely, is chosen with the harmonic measure of from infinity. This is the limit, as , of the law of the first point of hit by a simple random walk started at .
Check for the first step: consists of the four neighbours of . By the symmetry of under rotation by a right angle, each of them is hit first with probability . So is for a uniformly random neighbour of . From then on the probabilities are no longer uniform. Points at the tips of are much more likely to be hit than points in its fjords.
Remarks
The model was introduced by Thomas Witten and Leonard Sander in 1981. Its rule is the discrete analogue of growth driven by harmonic measure, so it also models electrodeposition and viscous fingering. Simulations show branching, fractal clusters, with a fractal dimension near in the plane, but this is not proved. Harry Kesten proved that the radius of is at most of order almost surely in two dimensions. It is not even known whether is, in a suitable sense, a fractal of dimension less than .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
