Definition
Let be an algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field , with its Zariski topology. The dimension is the supremum of the integers such that there is a chain of irreducible closed subsets of .
Remarks
For every variety this supremum is finite. If is an affine variety, then is the Krull dimension of its coordinate ring . The reason is that irreducible closed subsets of correspond to prime ideals of , with inclusions reversed. For every variety, equals the transcendence degree of the function field over . A nonempty open subset of has .
Example: , since has transcendence degree over . The chain of linear subspaces has length .
Example: if is irreducible and not constant, the hypersurface has dimension .
The dimension of a reducible algebraic set is the largest dimension of its irreducible components.
