Definition
Let be a nonempty directed set. A directed system of algebras over consists of algebras of one signature, for , and homomorphisms for , such that:
- is the identity of for each ;
- whenever .
On the disjoint union of the universes, let for and when for some . The direct limit has as universe the set of classes of this equivalence relation. For an -ary operation and , choose and put .
Remarks
The relation is transitive and the operations do not depend on the choices of and representatives, because is directed and the are homomorphisms. For a nullary operation , take any and put . The maps are homomorphisms , and they make the direct limit a colimit of the system.
Example: let for , with for . These maps are injective homomorphisms satisfying clauses 1 and 2, and the direct limit is the PrΓΌfer -group.
Non-example: over , take for all with for all and . Clause 2 fails, since while . Setting instead gives a directed system with direct limit .
