Direct product of algebras
Builds on Algebraic structureCartesian product
Definition
Let be a set and let be a family of algebras of the same signature, with universes . The direct product has as universe the Cartesian product , the set of functions on with for each . Each -ary fundamental operation is defined coordinatewise:
Remarks
For each the projection is a homomorphism onto when the product is nonempty. For two factors one writes , with elements written as pairs. The product of the empty family is a one-element algebra.
Example: the group has six elements and is cyclic, generated by . Coordinatewise, , which is first for .
Non-example: the group is not isomorphic to the direct product , although both have four elements. In the product, for every , since this holds in each coordinate, while in .
A direct product of algebras is the product in the category of algebras of the given signature, by the universal property of the projections.
