Discrete logarithm
Definition
Let be a finite cyclic group of order , with a generator . For each , the discrete logarithm of to the base is the unique integer with such that . The notation is .
Remarks
In elementary number theory, and is a primitive root modulo . Then is also called the index of , and . The rule holds, as for ordinary logarithms. For example, is a primitive root modulo , and . So modulo . No efficient general algorithm to compute discrete logarithms is known. The Diffie–Hellman key exchange uses this fact.
Explanations
L1 human
Modular exponentiation computes from . The discrete logarithm goes back from the result to . For small numbers, a table of powers is enough. For numbers with hundreds of digits, the problem seems very hard.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
