Definition
Let be a complex Banach space, and let be a bounded operator with spectrum . A point is a normal eigenvalue of if:
- is an isolated point of , and
- the Riesz projector of for has finite rank.
The discrete spectrum is the set of normal eigenvalues of .
Remarks
A normal eigenvalue is an eigenvalue, and its algebraic multiplicity, the rank of , is finite.
Example: if is a compact operator, then every nonzero point of is a normal eigenvalue. For on , each is isolated in , and is the projection onto the span of , of rank .
Non-example: if is infinite-dimensional, then and is isolated, but has infinite rank, so clause 2 fails. For above, fails clause 1, since .
For a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space, is the set of isolated eigenvalues of finite multiplicity. Then is the disjoint union of and the essential spectrum.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
