Definition
A discrete valuation ring is a principal ideal domain that has exactly one nonzero prime ideal.
Remarks
Equivalently, is an integral domain with field of fractions such that there is a surjective discrete valuation with . A generator of the maximal ideal is a uniformizer; every nonzero is with a unit of . The nonzero ideals of are exactly for .
Example: for a prime , the ring is a discrete valuation ring. Every nonzero element is with a unit and , so every nonzero ideal is , which is principal. The only nonzero prime among these is . The ring of formal power series over a field and the ring of -adic integers are other examples.
Non-example: is a principal ideal domain, but it has infinitely many nonzero prime ideals , so it is not a discrete valuation ring. A field is not a discrete valuation ring either: it has no nonzero prime ideal.
