Discriminant of a number field
Builds on Algebraic number fieldDeterminantTrace of a linear map
Definition
Let be an algebraic number field of degree , and let be its ring of integers. Let be an integral basis of , that is, a basis of as a free -module. Let be the field embeddings . The discriminant of is the number where is the determinant.
Remarks
The value does not depend on the integral basis or on the order of the embeddings. Two integral bases differ by a matrix in , whose determinant is . Reordering the rows changes only the sign of the determinant. An equivalent form is , where the field trace is the trace of the -linear map on . The field trace of an algebraic integer is an integer, so is an integer. It is never , and its sign is , where is the number of pairs of complex conjugate embeddings.
Example: for the basis of gives , so . More generally, for a squarefree integer , the discriminant of is if and otherwise.
Non-example: the basis gives . This is not , because is a basis of the subring and not of the whole ring of integers .
