Disjoint union of posets

Builds on Partial order

Definition

Let (P,≤P)(P, \le_P) and (Q,≤Q)(Q, \le_Q) be partially ordered sets with P∩Q=∅P \cap Q = \varnothing. The disjoint union P+QP + Q is the set P∪QP \cup Q with the following relation ≤\le. For x,y∈P∪Qx, y \in P \cup Q, x≤yx \le y holds if and only if either x,y∈Px, y \in P and x≤Pyx \le_P y, or x,y∈Qx, y \in Q and x≤Qyx \le_Q y.

Remarks

If PP and QQ are not disjoint, first replace them by disjoint copies, such as P×{0}P \times \set{0} and Q×{1}Q \times \set{1}. The same construction works for any family of pairwise disjoint posets. Example: if PP is the chain a<ba < b and QQ is the chain c<dc < d, then P+QP + Q is the poset 𝟐+𝟐\mathbf{2} + \mathbf{2} with exactly the strict relations a<ba < b and c<dc < d. Non-example: the poset with a<ba < b, c<dc < d and also a<da < d is not P+QP + Q, since it relates an element of PP to an element of QQ. An antichain with nn elements is the disjoint union of nn one-element posets. The width of P+QP + Q is the sum of the widths, and its height is the larger of the two heights.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
