Displacement current
Summary
The displacement current density is the time derivative of the electric displacement field. Maxwell added it to Ampère's circuital law, so that a changing electric field produces a magnetic field just as an electric current does. Without it Ampère's law would contradict conservation of charge for currents that are not steady. With it Maxwell's equations predict electromagnetic waves.
