Displacement thickness

Builds on Boundary layer

Definition

Consider a two-dimensional incompressible boundary layer along the wall y=0y = 0, with tangential velocity u(x,y)u(x, y) and outer speed U(x)>0U(x) > 0. Assume that 1−u(x,⋅)/U(x)1 - u(x, \cdot) / U(x) is integrable on (0,∞)(0, \infty). The displacement thickness at xx is δ∗(x)=∫0∞(1−u(x,y)U(x))dy.\delta^*(x) = \int_0^\infty \Big( 1 - \frac{u(x, y)}{U(x)} \Big) dy. The momentum thickness is the companion quantity θ(x)=∫0∞uU(1−uU)dy\theta(x) = \int_0^\infty \frac{u}{U} \big( 1 - \frac{u}{U} \big) dy, and H=δ∗/θH = \delta^* / \theta is the shape factor.

Remarks

Example: for the linear profile u=Uy/δu = U y / \delta for 0≤y≤δ0 \le y \le \delta and u=Uu = U for y>δy > \delta, one gets δ∗=∫0δ(1−y/δ) dy=δ/2\delta^* = \int_0^\delta (1 - y / \delta) \, dy = \delta / 2 and θ=∫0δyδ(1−yδ)dy=δ/6\theta = \int_0^\delta \frac{y}{\delta}\big(1 - \frac{y}{\delta}\big) dy = \delta / 6, so H=3H = 3.

Non-example: a profile with u=U(1−(1+y)−1)u = U (1 - (1 + y)^{-1}) tends to UU too slowly: 1−u/U=(1+y)−11 - u / U = (1 + y)^{-1} is not integrable, so δ∗\delta^* is not defined.

The mass flux deficit ∫0∞(U−u) dy\int_0^\infty (U - u) \, dy equals Uδ∗U \delta^*. For the Blasius layer δ∗≈1.72νx/U\delta^* \approx 1.72 \sqrt{\nu x / U} and H≈2.59H \approx 2.59.
