Dissipative operator

Summary

A dissipative operator is a linear operator AA on a Banach space such that ∥(λ−A)x∥≥λ∥x∥\norm{(\lambda - A)x} \ge \lambda \norm{x} for every λ>0\lambda > 0. On a Hilbert space this means Re⁡⟨Ax,x⟩≤0\operatorname{Re}\ip{Ax}{x} \le 0 for every xx in the domain. The densely defined maximal dissipative operators are exactly the generators of semigroups that do not increase norms, by the Lumer–Phillips theorem. The name comes from physics: the evolution u′=Auu' = Au loses energy and never gains it.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
