Dissipative operator
Builds on Banach spaceUnbounded operator
Definition
Let be a real or complex Banach space and let be a linear operator in with domain . The operator is dissipative if A dissipative operator is maximal dissipative, or m-dissipative, if moreover maps onto for some .
Remarks
If is a Hilbert space with inner product , then is dissipative if and only if for all . In a general Banach space, is dissipative if and only if for each there is a functional in the dual space with and .
Example: on , let on smooth functions with compact support in . Integration by parts gives , so is dissipative.
Non-example: the identity on a nonzero Hilbert space is not dissipative, since for . Directly, for and , .
