Distance modulus

Builds on Apparent magnitudeAbsolute magnitude

Definition

Let an object have apparent magnitude mm and absolute magnitude MM in the same passband. The distance modulus of the object is μ=m−M\mu = m - M.

Remarks

If no light is absorbed on the way, the definition of MM gives μ=5log⁡10d10 pc,d=10μ/5+1 pc.\mu = 5 \log_{10} \frac{d}{10\ \mathrm{pc}}, \qquad d = 10^{\mu/5 + 1}\ \mathrm{pc}. With interstellar extinction AA in magnitudes, m−M=5log⁡10(d/10 pc)+Am - M = 5\log_{10}(d / 10\ \mathrm{pc}) + A. Example: the Large Magellanic Cloud has μ≈18.5\mu \approx 18.5, so d≈104.7d \approx 10^{4.7} pc ≈50\approx 50 kpc. Non-example: the difference of the apparent magnitudes of two stars is not a distance modulus; it compares two objects, not one object with itself at 1010 pc. The symbol μ\mu is the usual notation, though it also denotes proper motion.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
