Distinguished triangle
Builds on Triangulated category
Definition
Let be a triangulated category. A triangle in is a diagram of objects and morphisms of . A distinguished triangle, or exact triangle, is a triangle in the class of distinguished triangles that is part of the structure of .
Remarks
In a distinguished triangle, consecutive maps compose to zero: , and . For each object , applying gives a long exact sequence . By TR1 and TR3, the third object is determined by up to a non-unique isomorphism; it is called a cone of . Example: is distinguished for every , by the axiom TR1. Non-example: if , then is not distinguished. Indeed, the long exact sequence for would give exact, which forces , but . In the homotopy category of complexes, the distinguished triangles are those isomorphic to for a chain map .
