Divergent series

Definition

A series ∑an\sum a_n of real numbers is divergent if it is not a convergent series. Thus its sequence of partial sums has no limit in R\mathbb{R}.

Remarks

The series 1+1+1+⋯1 + 1 + 1 + \cdots diverges, and its partial sums tend to +∞+\infty. The series 1−1+1−1+⋯1 - 1 + 1 - 1 + \cdots diverges, and its partial sums oscillate between 11 and 00. The harmonic series diverges, although its terms tend to 00. Summation methods, such as Cesàro summation, give values to some divergent series.

Explanations

L1 human

A divergent series has no sum in the usual sense. Its running totals grow without bound or keep jumping around.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
