statement proposition

Divisibility by 3

Statement

Let nn be a natural number with decimal digits dkdk−1…d0d_k d_{k-1} \dots d_0, so that n=∑i=0kdi10in = \sum_{i=0}^{k} d_i 10^i. Then 3∣n3 \mid n if and only if 3∣d0+d1+⋯+dk3 \mid d_0 + d_1 + \dots + d_k.

Remarks

More precisely, n≡d0+d1+⋯+dk(mod3)n \equiv d_0 + d_1 + \dots + d_k \pmod 3. This holds because 10≡1(mod3)10 \equiv 1 \pmod 3, so 10i≡1(mod3)10^i \equiv 1 \pmod 3 by compatibility with powers. For example, 3∣7,3413 \mid 7{,}341, because 7+3+4+1=157 + 3 + 4 + 1 = 15 and 3∣153 \mid 15. The rule for divisibility by 9 has the same proof.

Explanations

L1 human

Add the digits of the number. If the sum is a multiple of 33, the number is a multiple of 33, and if not, it is not. You can repeat: for 987,654987{,}654 the sum is 3939, and 3+9=123 + 9 = 12 is a multiple of 33. So 3∣987,6543 \mid 987{,}654.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
