Division algorithm

Statement

Let aa and bb be integers with b≠0b \neq 0. Then there is exactly one pair of integers (q,r)(q, r) such that a=bq+ra = b q + r and 0≤r<∣b∣0 \le r < |b|.

Remarks

The integer qq is the quotient and the integer rr is the remainder of the division of aa by bb. The remainder is 00 if and only if bb divides aa. For example, −7=3⋅(−3)+2-7 = 3 \cdot (-3) + 2, so the quotient of −7-7 by 33 is −3-3 and the remainder is 22.

Explanations

L1 human

You can share aa objects into groups of bb objects, with some objects left over. The theorem says that the number of full groups and the rest are unique, if the rest is smaller than ∣b∣|b|. For example, 17=5⋅3+217 = 5 \cdot 3 + 2: you get 33 groups of 55, and 22 objects stay.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this
