Doodson numbers
Builds on Tidal harmonic constituents
Definition
Let be mean lunar time, the mean longitude of the Moon, and the mean longitude of the Sun. Let be the longitude of the lunar perigee, and the longitude of the solar perigee. Let , where is the longitude of the Moon's ascending node. Let a tidal constituent have argument where and for . The Doodson number of the constituent is the six-digit code
Remarks
Example: the principal lunar semidiurnal tide has argument , so and its Doodson number is . Since solar time is , the solar semidiurnal tide has argument and number . The diurnal tides and have arguments and , and numbers and . The first digit is the species: long period, diurnal, semidiurnal, terdiurnal. Non-example: the list written without the shift, as , is not the Doodson number of . The shift by in the last five places is part of the code. The fortnightly constituent , with argument , has number .
