Definition
Let be a metric space and let be a Borel measure on . For and , let be the open ball of centre and radius . The measure is doubling if:
- for all and .
- There is a constant with for all and .
Remarks
Example: Lebesgue measure on is doubling with . Indeed with the volume of the unit ball, so the ratio is exactly .
Non-example: the standard Gaussian measure on satisfies clause 1 but not clause 2. Let be its density, which decreases on , and let . Then and . So , which is unbounded as .
Some authors drop clause 1 and only ask for clause 2 for balls of positive finite measure. A metric space with a doubling measure is a doubling metric space: each ball is covered by a bounded number of balls of half the radius.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
