Doubly stochastic matrix
Builds on Square matrixNonnegative matrix
Definition
Let and let be a real matrix. The matrix is doubly stochastic if:
- for all and .
- for each row index .
- for each column index .
Remarks
Clause 1 says that is a nonnegative matrix. With , clauses 2 and 3 say and . Example: ; all entries are , and each row and each column sums to . Every permutation matrix is doubly stochastic. Non-example: satisfies clauses 1 and 2, but its columns sum to and , so clause 3 fails. The set of doubly stochastic matrices is the Birkhoff polytope.
