Drude model
Builds on Electric fieldPermittivityLorentz oscillator model
Definition
Let a metal contain free electrons per unit volume, each with charge and mass . Let be the mean time between collisions. Let be a spatially uniform electric field. The Drude model assumes that the mean momentum of an electron obeys and that the current density is .
Remarks
For a constant field the steady state is , so with the DC conductivity : this is Ohm's law. For a time-harmonic field the steady state gives with The relative permittivity is then This is the Lorentz oscillator model with natural frequency and damping rate . For , is close to , negative for , where the metal reflects, and positive for , where it becomes transparent.
Example: in a constant field , the function solves the equation of motion and tends to the steady state .
Non-example: electrons bound to atoms by a restoring force do not fit the model. Their equation of motion has the additional term with , and they are described by the Lorentz oscillator model instead.
